Late last month, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds crossed a major milestone and obtained the highest peak player count of a non-Valve game on Steam, behind Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Dota 2. When this happened, Battlegounds reached player counts just shy of 500,000. Now it was revealed that player numbers skyrocketed upwards of 800,000 to pass CS:GO’s long held all-time peak player count and Dota 2’s peak players today.
PlayerUnknown himself, Brendan Greene, announced on Twitter that PUBG had surpassed Dota 2’s player count with 877,844 players compared to 842,919 today, making it the #1 game on Steam currently. Not only that, but it overtook CS:GO’s second place position for peak player counts of all time. The highest amount of concurrent players on Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has only risen to a little over 850,000 in April 2016.
With the pace that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is going, it will be interesting to see if it can dethrone Dota 2 for highest peak player count of all time, which sits at over 1.2 million. PUBG certainly has a ways to go before it reaches that stage, but it still has a lot of life left in it. The game is still in Early Access, so who knows what kinds of numbers it will hit when it finally releases.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is available for $29.99 on Steam, with a full release planned for Q4 of this year. It is also set to come to Xbox One as well in the Game Preview program with an undetermined release date.
