UPDATE 3: Konami has issued a statement regarding the future of the series which you can read about here.
UPDATE 2: There has been some debate about the ultimate fate of Silent Hills, largely based around the fact that Guillermo Del Toro was responding to the question of what it was like collaborating with Kojima. While there is no official word about Silent Hills being cancelled, the evidence seems clear, especially with Norman Reedus’ response added into the mix. Even if a game called Silent Hills gets released at some point by Konami it will not be anything like the original intention laid out last year.
UPDATE: Norman Reedus has commented on the cancellation, tweeting “Super bummed about this was really looking forward to it. Hopefully it’ll come back around. Sorry everyone”
As many had feared, it appears that the upcoming Silent Hill series revival, Silent Hills has been cancelled. The project was to be a collaboration between Konami, Hideo Kojima, and filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro. After the recent strangeness surrounding Kojima and his relationship with Konami, many had speculated that the project would be cancelled, which was just confirmed by Del Toro at the San Francisco International Film Festival, saying “It’s not gonna happen and that breaks my greasy heart.” This quote was later tweeted by a fan, and was subsequently retweeted by Del Toro’s assistant, seemingly confirming the statement.
Silent Hills was announced in a very unique way last year. A random game referred to only as P.T. or Playable Teaser was released on the PlayStation Store. At the end there was a trailer for Silent Hills, which would star The Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus. Giving even more credence to the fact that Silent Hills is cancelled, P.T. is set to be removed from the PlayStation Store on April 29th.
This is just another the long line of strange occurrences at Konami following a supposed falling out between them and legendary game designer Hideo Kojima. Starting last month, Kojima’s name has been systematically removed from all of his projects, and his own development studio. The move was said to be a part of restructuring at Konami, but the utter silence from Kojima led many to speculate that much more was going on behind the scenes. With the full cancellation of Kojima’s passion project, Silent Hills, it seems that Konami is completely wiping the slate in terms of their connection with Kojima.
We don’t yet know what information Del Toro has that led him to say what he did, so there is still a slim chance that he was misinformed or misspoke. Hopefully we get some more word from Konami on this matter, but given their silence on previous happenings, there isn’t much chance of that.
