Star Wars: Attack Squadrons cancelled in closed beta

For 90% of Star Wars fans, there are two main fantasies that don’t involve rescuing someone in a gold bikini. The first is straight up being a Jedi, or a Sith depending on your personal preferences and life goals. What’s not to love? Crazy force abilities, energy swords, and an enigmatic attitude that pisses your friends right off. The second fantasy is piloting your own X-Wing fighter, though we’re taking big a step back on that one.

Area 52 Games and Disney have cancelled Star Wars: Attack Squadrons during its beta test. While EA is still primarily responsible for the AAA Star Wars titles with DICE and Visceral Games hard at work, Disney takes care of smaller releases including the late Star Wars: Attack Squadrons. This one was supposed to be a free-to-play browser experience designed to target the casual gamer and was rumored to be comparable to something like the classic Rogue Squadron. It would have used a variety of ships, possibly beyond X-Wings and TIE fighters.

The only reason given for the cancellation is that focus is being shifted to other games. Keeping in mind that they were in closed beta, things must have jumped the rails pretty badly to pull the plug at this point. Or, at the very least, it was some kind of Dark Side plot. I guess we’ll just have to settle for flying the Millenium Falcon…in a game, of course.
