The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is just about to get its final DLC expansion with Blood and Wine later this month, coming nearly a year after the release of the original game. This critically acclaimed title received much praise and many awards since release with fantastic sales as well, so you’d think a sequel would be almost a certainly, but that may not actually be the case.
CD Projekt Red is the developer behind The Witcher series and their co-founder Marcin Iwinski was recently interviewed by Eurogamer and talked about the upcoming DLC expansion. With this wrapping up The Witcher 3, of course the discussion of the future came up in which Iwinski said the following:
“We honestly don’t know. We don’t have anything planned as of now to be honest on the next Witcher As we said before, never say never [but] right now it’s really Blood and Wine. This is the end. Blood and Wine is [the] closing and there won’t be any Witcher any time soon – if there ever will be one. And I would really like to see how people feel about it, if they will enjoy it.”
He then outlined their upcoming six year plan that included the announced Cyberpunk 2077 sometime after 2017, as well as a AAA RPG.
However, he made sure to say that this RPG is not a new The Witcher game, with him specifically saying “I can assure you we are not working on another Witcher.”
I’m sure we’ll eventually see another game of some sort in The Witcher series, whether it’s a sequel or spinoff, but for now it sounds like CD Projekt Red has their eyes elsewhere.
